Eating Disorders Coaching and Counselling

The personal qualities that make eating disorders so tenacious can be harnessed to provide a major resource in bringing about a sustainable recovery.

You are different. You know you are and yet you may also be afraid of that difference.

Generalizations are notoriously risky, but it does seem to me that my clients who have used their relationship with food as a coping strategy have several qualities in common. These include:

  • high intelligence,
  • conscientiousness,
  • the pursuit of excellence, and
  • consistent idealism.

Though many are young in years, my clients frequently seem wise beyond those years. Sometimes, it seems as if they jumped from childhood to adulthood without going through a messy transition. This can be deceptive, for their powerful combination of intelligence and competence can mislead others into believing all is well - especially if that's what others want to believe.

Despite the anguish and sometimes despair of these clients, the following attributes and motivations can often be discerned:

  • A proven desire to grow;
  • Independence of thought;
  • Creative in thought and often in fact;
  • Generally appreciative of life;
  • An inner sense of unrealized potential;
  • A tendency to measure themselves against the best in the world.

Their occupations have reflected these qualities:

  • students at all levels of education;
  • creative artists such as painters, sculptors, dancers and musicians;
  • media professionals: writers, designers, etc.;
  • homemakers and mothers;
  • professionals of all kinds;
  • independent businesspeople.

Each client has used their coaching relationship with me to empower and embolden themselves, to discover their own perfection and develop new skills and confidence. They have then felt able to take more considered risks, to satisfy themselves and enrich their lives without having to resort to self-punishing coping strategies.

If there is anything in this broad profile that resonates with you, we may have a basis for a productive partnership. You can explore further by scheduling a free exploratory visit or 'phone discussion. My contact details are below:
